IN MEMORIAM There are some who bring a light so great into the world that even after they have gone the light remains. Peggy Baskin (1930-2023) Longtime Festival-goers, Gayle and Scott Spencer loved many activities and pursuits—adventure, travel, birding, nature, and music—and they spent a lifetime enjoying and supporting those endeavors with passion. Gayle and Scott Spencer met as coworkers at Lockheed and married in 1978. Together they enjoyed classical, folk and opera music and came to the Cabrillo Festival every year until 2019, when health issues interceded. Their devotion to the Festival was reflected in so many ways, not least of which was that the Cabrillo Festival was mentioned in both their obituaries–a testament to the important role we played in their cultural and intellectual lives. It is a great honor for any organization to know how much we’ve meant to our patrons. The Spencers were full subscribers and generous annual donors and upon Gayle’s passing this fall we learned that we had been designated in their estate plans. Theirs is a significant bequest which will bolster the Artistic Initiative Reserve Fund and allow the Festival to keep bringing forward the voices of contemporary composers. Their gift joins others in enabling this annual gathering of our extraordinary orchestra and our adventurous audiences to continue as the creative and spiritual oasis that Gayle and Scott cherished through their lifetimes.
