KAREN OUZOUNIAN Cello PHILIPPE QUINT Violin MICHAEL SACHS Trumpet CABRILLO FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC 24 GUEST ARTISTS Hailed by the United Kingdom’s Daily Telegraph for his “searingly poetic lyricism”, Philippe Quint has established himself as one of America's preeminent violinists, enchanting audiences through his performances that seamlessly blend consummate musicianship with “breadth of tone and passion” ( The New York Times ). Quint’s relentless pursuit of the novel and unconventional, coupled with an insatiable curiosity, exemplifies his unique approach towards music. Continuously at the forefront of his commitment to classical music, Quint’s artistic philosophy is inherently uncomplicated: “Art, as great as classical music, is absolutely essential to our society”, he once shared with the Gramophone magazine. With multiple GRAMMY-Award nominations to his name, Quint is celebrated for his distinctive approach to classical core repertoire, advocacy for contemporary music, rekindling of neglected repertoire, and pioneering of an original music in context multimedia format. Quint has soloed with some of the world’s finest ensembles across the globe including the London Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Quint's unwavering dedication to contemporary music has resulted in numerous premieres of works by some of the most exceptional composers of today including Lera Auerbach, James Lee III, Alyssa Weinberg, Errollyn Wallen, and Jakub Ciupinsky while continuing to highlight eminent American composers William Bolcom, Lukas Foss, John Corigliano, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Cowell, and Ned Rorem. Michael Sachs joined The Cleveland Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 1988. Celebrating his 36th season with the orchestra, Michael is the longest-serving Principal Trumpet in the history of The Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Sachs has been frequently featured as soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra. Highlights include the world premieres of Wynton Marsalis’ Concerto for Trumpet, John Williams’ Concerto for Trumpet, Michael Hersch’s Night Pieces , Matthias Pintscher’s Chute d’Etoiles , and the United States premiere of Hans Werner Henze's Requiem , as well as solo appearances at the Lucerne Festival, Salzburg Festival, and Carnegie Hall. Starting in the Fall of 2024, Michael Sachs will be joining the Trumpet faculty at The Curtis Institute of Music. From 1988-2023, he served as Chair of the Brass Division and Head of the Trumpet Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Since 2015, Michael Sachs serves each summer as Music Director of Strings Music Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He is the author of numerous books including Daily Fundamentals for the Trumpet and The Orchestral Trumpet . Mr. Sachs was extensively involved in the planning of the National Brass Ensemble concert, recording, and DVD project for June 2014 involving music of Gabrieli and a new work by John Williams. Prior to joining The Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Sachs was a member of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, where he also served on the faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Originally from Los Angeles, Michael Sachs attended UCLA, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History before attending The Juilliard School of Music. His former teachers include Mark Gould, Anthony Plog, and James Stamp. Described as “radiant” and “expressive” ( The New York Times ) and “nothing less than gorgeous” (Memphis Commercial Appeal), cellist Karen Ouzounian creates music from a deeply personal place. An acclaimed soloist, chamber musician, collaborator and composer, she is the recipient of the S&R Foundation’s Washington Award and sought after for her open-hearted, vibrantly detailed and fiercely committed performances. Recent projects include the creation of an experimental theater work with director Joanna Settle; the world premiere of Lembit Beecher’s cello concerto Tell Me Again with the Orlando Philharmonic; the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s Shorthand for solo cello and strings with The Knights, which she toured as soloist with The Knights throughout Europe and the United States and released on Avie Records; the release of Kayhan Kalhor’s Blue as the Turquoise Night of Neyshabur for solo cello, kamancheh and tabla; the development, touring, and recording of Osvaldo Golijov’s Falling Out of Time ; and the digital world premiere of Beecher’s A Year to the Day , filmed for The Violin Channel with Augustin Hadelich and Nicholas Phan. Additional recent and upcoming appearances include concertos with the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Sarasota Festival Orchestra, Greater Bridgeport Symphony, and Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago, Chile, in repertoire ranging from the Elgar Cello Concerto to John Adams’s Absolute Jest . Dedicated to the art of chamber music, Ouzounian was a founding member of the Aizuri Quartet for eleven years, during which time the ensemble was awarded major chamber music prizes on three continents and earned a GRAMMY nomination. She has toured with Musicians from Marlboro, appeared at the Ravinia, Caramoor and Ojai festivals, and performs regularly as a member of the Silkroad Ensemble and The Knights. Her evening-length video work In Motion , an explorationofheritage,familyhistoryandmigration through interviews, her own compositions, and collaborations with visual artists Kevork Mourad and Nomi Sasaki and composer-percussionist Haruka Fujii, was presented by BroadBand. Recent compositions include works for the Silkroad Ensemble, Noe Music, and an upcoming work for solo cello, Armenian instruments, and choir for Cantori New York.
