He holds honorary doctorates from 41 of America’s top academic institutions. Wynton Marsalis’ core beliefs are based on jazz fundamentals: freedom and individual creativity (improvisation); collective action and good manners (swing); acceptance, gratitude and resilience (the blues). Marsalis believes that music has the power to elevate our quality of life and lead us to a higher level of consciousness. Marsalis presently serves as Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Director of Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School, and President of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. age 17, Marsalis joined the legendary Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. In 1981, Marsalis formed a quintet and began touring worldwide—and he hasn’t stopped since. He has rekindled widespread international interest in jazz over the past four decades vis-à-vis performances, recordings, educational programs, books, curricula, and relentless public advocacy. Marsalis is inspired to experiment in an ever- widening palette of forms, constituting some of the most advanced thinking in modern jazz and in American music on the broad scale. His body of original work includes (but is not limited to) 600 songs and movements, 11 dance scores, 13 suites, four symphonies, two chamber pieces, two string quartets, a jazz oratorio, a fanfare, and concertos for violin, tuba and most recently, trumpet. Marsalis was appointed Messenger of Peace by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan (2001), awarded The National Medal of Arts (2005), and The National Medal of Humanities (2016). Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, he is the son of jazz pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis, Jr. Wynton started practicing trumpet at age 6. As a child, he played in New Orleans traditional marching bands, funk groups, concert bands, symphonic orchestras, and jazz ensembles. Born in Wilton, Connecticut, Daniel Kellogg is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Yale School of Music. He was on faculty at the University of Colorado College of Music for fourteen years, where he served as Professor of Composition, head of the composition program, and was the Christoffersen Composition Fellow. Residing in Harlem, New York City, Daniel Kellogg shares his home with his wife, pianist Hsing-ay Hsu, and their daughter, Kaela. Embracing the vibrant culture of the city, he has participated in the New York City marathon annually since making the move from Colorado in 2019. Kellogg finds joy in travel, photography, and cooking for his family. artistic innovation in the classical music community. Chosen as YCA Composer-in-Residence in 2002, Kellogg was a member of the Young Concert Artists roster for ten years. His compositions have been premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Aspen Music Festival, Takacs Quartet, and eighth blackbird. He has also served as Composer- in-Residence for the South Dakota Symphony, Green Bay Symphony, and Lexington Philharmonic. Dr. Kellogg's honors include a Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, six ASCAP Young Composer Awards, the BMI William Schuman Prize, and the ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Award. His works have been broadcast on NPR's "Performance Today," "St. Paul Sundays," and BBC's "Live from Wigmore Hall" among others. He has Daniel Kellogg commenced his tenure as President of Young Concert Artists (YCA) in 2019, infusing the organizationwith his unique insights as an illustrious alumnus. Kellogg's journey from an emerging young composer, through a distinguished professorship, to an arts leader, endows him with a distinctive capability to advance YCA's renowned legacy.
