Wewant to give special thanks and recognition to our colleagues on the board and staff. For a group of very social, community-oriented folks who are dedicated to live performing arts, persevering over Zoom and email was no easy feat. And yet persevere they did! We have a remarkable board of directors, and we want to acknowledge immediate past president Liza Culick for her steady and impactful board leadership before and throughout the virtual seasons. She was a courageous wayfinder in helping determine our path forward. Leadership and leaps of faith played no small role in helping to create two ambitious virtual seasons with four world premiere commissions and the engagement of a multitude of interdisciplinary artists and community partners. The same can be said for coming “Back to Live” in 2022, with all its challenges and opportunities. We want to acknowledge the extraordinary work of Deputy Director Jessica Frye who celebrates her 15th anniversary this season (see page 10), Director of Artistic Operations Lyndsey Loosley, and Tamara Liu, our former Special Events and Programs Manager (and virtual H ow exciting it is to stand on the threshold of Cabrillo Festival’s 60th anniversary season—eager to welcome back Cristi Măcelaru, our orchestra members, composers, and guest artists, with a renewed sense of hope and possibility. There have been myriad milestones and achievements over the decades but having navigated the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic and the return to live in-person performances this summer may be the truest measure of our strength and purpose. Over these past two seasons, guided by our mission and our values, Cabrillo Festival was able to successfullymeet themoment. Within an entirely new paradigm, we reimagined the orchestral experience, created high quality, innovative online content, continued to bring new music to life, and most importantly, we kept our community connected despite the distance. And now we are thrilled to return to you with two extraordinary weeks of music, healing, and celebration—together again in community! For those of us on the board and staff of the Cabrillo Festival, the great take-away fromthe last three years is overwhelming gratitude. The generosity and dedication of our supporters, the devotion and commitment of our orchestra, composers, and guest artists, and the loyalty and partnership of private foundations gave us the resources and encouragement we needed amidst great uncertainty. We are grateful to everyone who supported us in big ways and small. The expressions of love and appreciation for the Festival have propelled us forward with an unwavering sense of purpose and pride. It also feels important to acknowledge that the Covid-relief funding granted to the performing arts by federal and state agencies has been a beacon of light and fundamental to Cabrillo Festival’s reemergence in 2022. We appreciate those who championed the Claire Schneeberger, Board President Ellen M. Primack, Executive Director season livestreaming guru). We also want to welcome our new Operations Associate Sam Barrow who has already become a valued member of the small and mighty administrative team. For decades Cabrillo Festival has held a vision that “the world would discover, experience, value, support and celebrate the voices and music of contemporary orchestral artists.” Since first stepping onto our podium in 2017, Cristi Măcelaru’s artistic vision for Cabrillo Festival was to create relevant work that reflects the world around us, speaks to the issues of our times, and includes a rich diversity of voices. Just a few years later, and now every orchestra in America and beyond is, indeed, featuring the works of living composers as never before, aiming to be more relevant and inclusive. Cabrillo Festival has long been a leader in our field. In 2016, then-president of the League of American Orchestras Jesse Rosen said, “All of America's orchestras (and there are 1,200 orchestras in the United States) look to what happens at Cabrillo…because Cabrillo Festival has really set the standard for fostering creativity and demonstrating an unbelievably genuine and rich relationship with its community.” Sixty years and counting! We will lead the way, starting with the extraordinary season you’re about to experience. Thank you for coming. Thank you for celebrating the music of our time and the creators who make it happen! Because of you we are STRONGER@60! GRATITUDE, HOPE & STRONGER@60
