CABRILLO FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC T he idea that through our lives we are reborn is a concept both too present and too real. Especially when the transformation itself seems unending. Yet we continue to have faith in the morning sun, its unparalleled steadiness teaching us that through it all, after the darkness of the night has vanished, the light will slowly reappear. It has been far too long since we have joined our souls and hearts, together embracing our wants and dreams of a better ‘us’. I don’t know about you, but I grew accustomed to the oasis of freedom, for the mind and for the spirit, that a small corner in the Universe—Santa Cruz— offers year after year. At the core of Cabrillo Festival’s mission is the idea of community, so it is no surprise that the summer of 2022marks a truly special moment. We celebrate who we are. And the tribulations of the recent past will help us redefine our fundamental commitment to the music that connects us—the music that continually touches our lives and challenges our thinking. For sixty summers, this cycle has been a steadfast commitment to our belief in a better life. Sixty reminders to the world of our decision to embrace the unknown, trust the creative process and enjoy the vast new landscapes we discover through the lens of music. This summer we welcome new voices and say goodbye to dear friends. We return home and bring back with us the healing power of community. For music is meant to unite us. And like the sun, with its reassured arrival each morning, it helps us find each other. May our spirits unite in peace, creating the special bond generations before have experienced right here, in our little corner of the Universe. Perfect as it is.
